Making compost extracts - Part 1
In part 2, I will go over why compost extracts are effective and useful.
Have you tried making compost extracts before?
Compost extracts are one of the simplest ways to turn high-quality compost into a liquid application for your soil.
But the main ingredient really matters.
The quality of your compost determines the quality of your extract.

If the compost is poorly made, lacks complex organic matter, or contains mostly bacteria with very little fungal structure and biological diversity, the extract will reflect that.
In other words, extracting compost into water does not magically improve poor compost.
It simply transfers what is already there into a liquid form.

From this single field of view, you can see three large nematodes, varied organic matter structures containing different nutrients plants can take up, diverse protozoa, active bacterial communities and fungal hyphae weaving their way through organic matter.
Municipality compost
Sparse activity, no predatory organisms like protozoa and nematodes, and fungal biomass is absent. Contains only bacteria.
